First South of Scotland event to explore hydrogen opportunities

Businesses interested in the hydrogen economy are being invited to take part in the first South of Scotland workshop, exploring the commercial opportunities the green fuel offers.

The South of Scotland Hydrogen Brokerage and Workshop takes place at Dumfries and Galloway College on Thursday 30 June, and is hosted by the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (SHFCA) and South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE).

The brokerage session brings together potential hydrogen producers and users to match up supply and demand in the local area.

It will showcase local players looking to produce green hydrogen along with examples of local companies representing the demand side of the industry. It will also cover steps being taken to stimulate the supply of skills and technologies to produce and utilise hydrogen.

The workshop will provide an overview of hydrogen as a wider commercial opportunity as well as the chance to hear from expert speakers and panels on the current state of development of the hydrogen economy.

A range of speakers will share their knowledge, including Doctor Nigel Holmes, Chief Executive of SHFCA.

It is estimated that up to 300,000 new jobs could be created across Scotland’s hydrogen sector by 2045, while the European hydrogen import market is predicted to be worth €20billion by 2030.

This is the second in a series of roadshow workshops around Scotland, the first having taken place in Inverness with Highlands and Islands Enterprise and SHFCA.

Dr Martin Valenti, SOSE’s Director of Net Zero

“Net Zero is one of the biggest economic opportunities of our time, and within that the expected growth of the hydrogen sector is one of the most significant.

“Hydrogen is particularly relevant for the South of Scotland. While our region’s contribution to Scotland’s renewable energy approaching 20%, the real growth is forecast to be in production of hydrogen using entirely renewable electricity sources.

“This is therefore a fantastic time for us to host the first hydrogen brokerage and workshop in the South of Scotland, alongside the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association.

“We have a range of excellent speakers lined up ready to share their knowledge with any business interested in finding out more about this exciting opportunity.”
