Zero Waste Scotland and South of Scotland Enterprise team up to bolster circular economy efforts across Southern belt

Zero Waste Scotland and South of Scotland Enterprise have agreed a landmark partnership that will see them work together to accelerate the South of Scotland’s circular economy ambitions.

The not-for-profit organisations marked the occasion with an all-day event, hosted at Dalbeattie-based business, Jas P Wilson, who showcased their region-leading practices in circular economy and their journey to Net Zero.

The collaboration will see both bodies combine their shared expertise to identify, develop, and support local and regional opportunities to explore and implement circular solutions to their operations.

As Scotland’s circular economy expert, Zero Waste Scotland will provide access to expertise and advice on all aspects, opportunities, and benefits of embracing a more circular way of operating, while South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE) will work with people and businesses across the region to grow its economy by providing investment, expertise and mentoring in more sustainable way of living and operating.

Businesses such as Jas P Wilson, the UK’s leading national supplier of forestry and firewood equipment and machinery, have already benefitted from support in furthering their net zero efforts.

The partnership aims to inspire and empower the region to think bigger, greener, and unlock significant opportunities for all.

Iain Gulland, Chief Executive of Zero Waste Scotland

“This is an exciting first step in what is sure to be a promising journey with SOSE, as well as the people and businesses across the south of Scotland.

"Zero Waste Scotland has seen fantastic progress can be made when we work directly with cities and regions to help them recognise and embrace their circular opportunities.

"By joining forces with SOSE, who are already doing fantastic work in supporting the area, I’m confident we will do great work together.”

Dr Martin Valenti, Director of Net Zero at SOSE

“Collaboration is key to achieving a Just Transition to Net Zero in the South of Scotland, and the opportunity to partner with Zero Waste Scotland to unlock opportunities for businesses and communities is especially exciting.

"Not only can businesses adopting circular economy practices save money, but there is the potential for them to develop new products and services.

"We have formed this productive partnership to aid in creating new market opportunities and to help our businesses become more productive and resilient.

"I am confident that businesses here in the South of Scotland will be the beneficiaries of our partnership.”

Billy Wilson, Managing Director at Jas P Wilson

“As we have pledged to be a Net Zero business by 2030, we look forward to developing a strong, positive relationship with SOSE and Zero Waste Scotland.

"As we develop various innovative projects, we aim to work alongside like-minded businesses and partner organisations to overcome the challenges around meeting Net Zero aims and developing a zero waste Circular Economy model.

"As we aim to pioneer new solutions to meet these goals, the knowledge and support of our partners will be critical if we are going to be able to maximise the potential to drive positive change across the sector.”
